The Unwritten Rules
Pétanque is a social game with strong traditions. Knowing the etiquette makes the game more enjoyable for everyone.
On the Court
Never walk across a game in progress – always walk around the court.
Stand at least 2 meters away from players and stay out of their line of sight.
Don't pick up or touch boules during measurement – let the designated measurer handle it.
Wait to be invited before joining a game in progress.
Sportsmanship
Congratulate good shots – even your opponent's. A well-placed 'beau tir!' goes a long way.
Accept the umpire's decisions gracefully, even if you disagree.
Be patient and encouraging with newcomers – everyone was a beginner once.
Discuss strategy with your teammates, but keep your voice low so opponents can focus.
Do's
- +Shake hands before and after every game
- +Wait for all players to be ready before throwing
- +Announce your shot intention ('je tire' or 'je pointe')
- +Include waiting players when numbers allow

- -Don't talk or make noise while someone is throwing

- -Don't kick or move boules before scoring is agreed
Tournament Behavior
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled match.
Know the specific tournament rules – they may differ from casual play.
Respect time limits for each round.
Dress appropriately – many tournaments have a dress code.
Bring your own equipment: boules, measuring tape, and a valid license if required.
